On the other hand, there were 3,504 deaths in 2012, lower than the number of deaths recorded in 2011. The crude death rate in 2012 is 5.37/1000 population while in 2011 the crude death rate is 5.29/1000 population.

Hospitals
There are 30 hospitals operating in the province of which 22 are privately owned and the remaining 8 are government hospitals. This does not include private medical practitioners who are maintaining medical clinics and admitting in-patients.
Of the government hospitals, only the provincial hospital, Gabriela Silang General Hospital in Vigan City is capable of providing tertiary level of care in terms of equipment facilities as well as specialized services like orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, ophthalmology and the like. This hospital also have CT scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and dialysis center.
There are six (6) district hospitals and one medicare hospital established in strategic locations in the province. Of the district hospitals, only the Southern Ilocos Ssur District Hospital located in Bio, Tagudin and the Central Ilocos Sur District Hospital in Narvacan are providing secondary level of health care.
St. Martin de Porres in Candon City and Metro Vigan Cooperative Hospital in Bantay and the St. James Hospital in Vigan City have the most modern equipment and facilities among the private hospitals operating in the province because they offer CT Scan among the services. St. James Hospital and the Metro Vigan Cooperative Hospital have dialysis centers

Atthe macro-level with a total of 602 Botika ng Barangay, (BnB) the standard ratio of one Botika ng Barangay per two barangays has been met.
There are 32 Rural Health Units located in the 32 municipalities of the province. However, the municipalities of Sigay and G. del Pilar have no Municipal Health Officers. There are 2 City Health Offices (CHO), the Candon City Health Office and the Vigan. City Health Office.
Assisting the RHU physicians are 40 Public Health Nurses giving a ratio of 1:12,189 persons, a figure that is slightly higher than the standard of 1:10,000 population. The municipalities of Sigay, del Pilar and Sugpon do not have a Public Health Nurse as per plantilla item.
The 182 Rural Health Midwives (RHM) are assigned to the Rural Health Units and the 156 Barangay Health Stations.
There are also 156 Barangay Health Stations (BHS) in the province, 11 in Vigan City and 9 in Candon City.
There are 3,127 Barangay Health Workers (BHW) who respond to the immediate primary health care needs of the community.
