The Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur through the strong leadership of Governor Ryan Singson was hailed as the most outstanding quality corn achiever of the Philippines which brought the province the Hall of Fame during this year 2017. During the past three years Ilocos Sur is consistent in developing the different programs in the agriculture section which the corn product is greatly attended. Ilocos Sur was awarded by the Department of Agriculture during the 5th National Quality Corn Achievers’ Awarding Ceremony held during the 13th Philippine National Corn Congress at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City Manila on November 22, 2017. Provincial Agriculturist Constante Botacion was again honored as outstanding provincial agriculturist of the Philippines and Oscar Tobia as outstanding provincial corn coordinator. The province was awarded the same title in the past two years for having an exemplary high grade corn produce with an average of 2.24 metric tons yield increment. This year, in the random sampling made by the evaluators from the DA, the corn productivity of the province has doubled into 5.8 metric tons. “This is a great success of our province. We are already a hall of famer but that doesn’t stop us to go through developing the corn products of our province, we will take it again as a challenge on how to sustain and even improve the corn industry. The cash award we received for the past two years aided the corn farmers in their post-production through the purchased machineries and hauling trucks. This year’s award will again be allotted to them but we will let our farmers decide of the kind of projects that would benefit them.” Gov. Ryan said. His administration has initiated different programs since he assumed office to increase the production and raise the quality of corn seeds planted in farmlands. These include production support, provision of farm implements, irrigation and water system, farm machinery extension and training support, and even marketing support that lead to high quality corn produce. The Ryan Corn Assistance Program is a flagship program establish by Gov. Ryan Singson’s administration. Under this program, the corn farmers are extended free hybrid corn seeds, fertilizers, farm machineries and equipment support and technical trainings. At present, there are 14,000 hectares planted with hybrid corn. 2,000 hectares are planted with white corn and 12, 000 hectares planted with yellow corn. These can produce five tons per hectare every cropping. In the span of three years the production of corn in the province was increased to 16.9 percent. A plaque was given to the Province aside from the five million pesos cash award handed by Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol and other national officials of the Department of Agriculture. Aside from the cash price, additional 5 million pesos is being awaited by the Ilocosurians from the Department of Agriculture as promised by DA Secretary Piñol served as an additional price.
