With all events smoothly starting according to plan, the on-going Batang Pinoy- Luzon leg attracting 7,675 athletes, coaches and officials coming from 129 local government units all over Luzon could be easily be one of the best staged legs in the event’s history. It further pushed Ilocos Sur’s quest to be in the country’s sporting map. “Batang Pinoy which is one of the country’s best grassroots sports programs serves as big inspiration to the youth in my province and the whole country to excel and make their mark in sports,” Ilocos Sur Gov. Ryan Singson said in a press briefing. Singson who is also the current President of the League of Provinces of the Philippines said aggressive sports hosting and programs will help realize his elusive dream of producing sports stars from homegrown talents. “We hope to produce an Ilocano Olympian and possibly bring home the elusive gold medal that still eludes us,” Singson said. This weeklong event is one the series of sports events to be hosted by the province. The most anticipated and the biggest is the staging of 2018 Palarong Pambansa. Earlier Ilocos Sur hosted the successful staging of Region I Athletic Association meet last March this year. Batang Pinoy is joint partnership of the Philippine Sports Commission, Dep’t of Education, DILG and the LGUs. Joining Singson during the grand opening rites were DepEd Usec. Tonisito M.C. Umali, PSC Commissioners Charles Raymund Maxey and Arnold Agustin.
